Operation Math Fair | Fostering Greater Interest in Secondary Level Math Education

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI Mona), organised and hosted a “Math Fair” on November 30, 2023, on the grounds of Glenmuir High School. The participants included 80 Sixth Form and 10 Fourth and Fifth Form students, along with 11 teachers from 8 high schools within the parishes of St. Elizabeth and Clarendon. The Math Fair was organized to engage and inspire students, bringing awareness to the opportunities that exist in pursuing studies in Mathematics. Through a variety of engaging activities such as mini-lectures, demonstrations, games, and information sessions, we were able to:

  • Inspire an attitude of excellence in the discipline and cultivate better problem-solving skills.
  • Spark interest among prospective applicants in our mathematics programs and potential career opportunities within the fields.
  • Create partnerships with the participating high schools.
  • Introduce students to Mathematics lecturers and graduate students at UWI and the various program offerings of the UWI's Mathematics Department

The fair was a tremendous success and will serve as a blueprint for future external engagements by the department.
