Professor Ellis joined the staff of The University of the West Indies, Mona in 1982 as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1987, and then to the rank of Professor in 2011.

Professor Ellis provided leadership as Head of the Physical Chemistry Section for some 21 years. His distinguished record of original work in the area of liquid crystals, the thermal behaviour of soaps and in organic salts which are essential elements in the human diet, produced a number of publications in many international peer reviewed journals.  He was a dedicated educator who supervised MSc and PhD candidates and taught within the chemistry programme across all four campuses of The UWI.

With an avid interest in sports, Professor Ellis served as the Deputy UWI representative on the Jamaica Cricket Board and was the first chairman of the Intercampus Games Committee at Mona. He actively participated in interdepartmental sporting activities and for many years captained the UWI Staff Cricket Team.

In light of this death, The UWI flags will be flown at half-mast on Thursday, November 19, 2020 and on the day of his funeral.
