The University of the West Indies, Mona, regrets to inform you that our former colleague, Mr. John Preston, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Mr. Preston joined The UWI Mona in 1977 as a Laboratory Technician at the Centre for Nuclear Sciences (now The International Center for Environmental and Nuclear Science (ICENS). He rose through the ranks as a result of his commitment to excellence, progressing from Laboratory Technician to Engineer in 1989. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Preston was a founding member of International Centre for Environmental and Nuclear Sciences (ICENS). His significant contributions helped shape the Centre into what it is today. Mr. Preston was a wealth of knowledge throughout his time, providing help during the onboarding process as well as historical insights into the Center's evolution. His devotion and expertise were visible in every project, process, and publication he worked on.
After retiring as a Senior Engineer in 2022, he remained a dedicated part of the ICENS team as a consultant until his death. Aside from his professional accomplishments, Mr. Preston was a cherished friend, an acclaimed footballer, and a mentor to many. His contributions to ICENS and the scientific community were invaluable, and he left a lasting legacy that will inspire many for years to come.
In light of this, the UWI flags was flown at half-mast on Friday, March 14, 2025 and on the day of his funeral.
The University extends condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Preston.
