Riveting Earthquake Forum Shakes Up Audience

The Faculty of Science and Technology, UWI Mona hosted its first public lecture in a series entitled "Science For Today" on September 27, 2018. Speakers, Professor Simon Mitchell (Head, Department of Geography and Geology; and the Earthquake Unit) and Dr. Nicolas McMorris (Civil Engineer, The Faculty of Engineering, UWI Mona) respectively presented facts on Jamaica's likelihood of experiencing a (major) earthquake in the near future. The forum was planned on the heels of the recent earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 on Sunday, September 16, 2018. In a bid to aid preparedness, those in attendance were thoroughly engaged on measures being implemented to monitor seismic activity islandwide, while learning about building-design factors to consider such as its capacity to facilitate immediate occupancy and collapse prevention. The less than 2-hour long session concluded with a question-answer section, moderated by Associate Dean, Dr. Sherene James-Williamson.
