Tremaine Bowman was recently awarded a PhD in Marine Sciences (2024) from the Faculty of Science and Technology, The UWI Mona. Her interest in Marine Biology stemmed from watching the Discovery Channel and National Geographic as a child. Upon seeing other Marine Biologists on TV, she decided to pursue a career in the Marine Sciences. In 2014, she left her home of Trinidad and Tobago to begin her undergraduate degree in Marine Biology at The UWI Mona. During this time she balanced her studies by being a part of the Trinidad and Tobago Students Association (TTSA) and the Catholic Students Movement (CSM). Upon completing her BSc. In 2017, she matriculated into the MPhil/PhD programme in 2017.
She was supervised by the late Dr. Eric Hyslop. Her thesis entitled, “Assessing Composition, Mapping Distribution and Examining Resource Partitioning in the Fish Assemblage of Salt River, Clarendon,” focused on the spatial and feeding ecology of juvenile fishes of a brackish water estuary on the south coast of Jamaica. She looks forward to continuing her work in the marine space by developing sustainable solutions to fossil fuels, advocating for more deep sea research in the Caribbean and by becoming a tertiary educator to inspire other regional researchers to pursue careers in this field.
