UWI FST Climate Modelers hosted Crop Simulation Workshop in Dominica

A team of climate modeling experts from the FST, The UWI Mona comprised of lead trainer, Dr. Dale Rankine (Dept. of Physics) and co-led by Dr. Jayaka Campbell (Dept. of Physics), Dr. Jane Cohen (Plant Physiologist, Dept. of Life Sciences), Mr. Steve Maximay (Agricultural Consultant) and Mr. Matthew Davis (MPhil Student, Department of Physics) conducted a "Climate Change and Crop Simulation Modelling” workshop in Dominica between September 27 and 30, 2022.  The workshop was an outcome of the “CAMBIO NET” Project coordinated by The Caribbean Agriculture Research and Development Institute (CARDI), through support of the INTERREG Caraïbes Programme under the European Development Fund.

The training exposed participants to two modelling software namely the FAO AquaCrop Model (V.6.1-2018), and the Decision Support System for Agro-technology Transfer (DSSAT v.8-2021) via the ACCEPT Agri Portal. ACCEPT Agri is an online platform ( which allows for customized assessment of yield potential developed under the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience’s (PPCR) Caribbean Regional Track and the Jamaica National program. The training had a number of goals including building awareness of climate resilience options in the Caribbean agriculture Sector;  demonstrating the value-added of crop simulation Modelling; providing hands-on training in the use of the ACCEPT Agri- Online Portal and insights into Climate Smart All-platform Application; and examining options for enhancing Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA).

Attendees included representatives from the Dominican Division of Agriculture, World University Services of Canada, Dominica State College, CARDI, as well as independent farmers. Participants found the workshop highly valuable and were awarded Certificates of Participation.
