Across the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Latin America, innovators are often faced with the same urgent question: how can meaningful solutions be created when resources are limited?

For Dr Curtis Busby-Earle, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona, that question sits at the heart of a new international publication he has helped to shape. With research interests spanning cybersecurity, requirements engineering, and quantum computing, Dr Busby-Earle brings a strong technology and systems-thinking perspective to the book’s exploration of resource-intelligent innovation.

Dr Busby-Earle is among the co-editors of Frugal Innovation: The Systematic Design of Resource-Intelligent Solutions, a book that brings together global perspectives on how societies can design smarter, leaner, and more impactful solutions using the resources already available to them.

The book is co-edited by Professor Lisa-Dionne Morris of the University of Leeds, Professor Sudesh Sivarasu of the University of Cape Town and UCT MedTech, Dr Curtis Busby-Earle of The University of the West Indies, and Dr Trust S. of OsloMet University.

Bringing together world-leading perspectives on frugal innovation, design thinking, design engineering, manufacturing, systems thinking, and lean impact, the publication examines how resource-intelligent solutions can be designed to address some of society’s most pressing challenges.

Dr Busby-Earle’s involvement reflects the growing contribution of Caribbean scholarship to global conversations on innovation, technology, and sustainable development. As an academic and researcher at The UWI, his work continues to support practical, context-sensitive solutions that respond to real-world needs, particularly in environments where resources must be used with creativity, precision, and purpose.
