In a ground-breaking achievement for Caribbean academia, Professor Simon Mitchell, an esteemed Sedimentary Geology expert from the Department of Geography and Geology, The University of the West Indies Mona (UWI), is the recipient of the 2023 W. Storrs Cole Memorial Research Award by The Geological Society of America (GSA). This marks the first time that a scholar from the Caribbean region has received this prestigious award. Prof. Mitchell, a prolific researcher was recognized for his significant contributions to the field of Sedimentary Geology. The award, which includes a research stipend, was announced in the July issue of Geology Today, a leading publication in the field.

The W. Storrs Cole Memorial Research Award is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional research accomplishments in the geological sciences.

To celebrate this remarkable achievement, Prof. Mitchell will be honoured at two prestigious ceremonies. Firstly, he will be honoured at the GSA Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony on October 15 during GSA Connects 2023 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Subsequently, he will receive recognition at the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research Awards Ceremony on October 18.

This award not only acknowledges Prof. Mitchell's remarkable accomplishments but also brings tremendous pride to the entire Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI. It serves as a testament to the university's commitment to fostering research excellence.
