Weather and Hydrological Forecasting Seminar

Monday, February 6, 2023 - 1:00pm

Weather And Hydrological Nowcasting/Forecasting Based On Observations Including Weather Radar And Atmospheric Modelling, And Their Applications.

Presenter: Roelof T Bruintjes from National Center for Atmospheric Research

With new observing technologies such as satellite, Doppler and Dual Polarization radars, and other sensors new opportunities for nowcasting and forecasting of several applications becomes a reality. The talk will focus on applications in several areas as it relates to measurements from weather radars and advanced new nowcast models. The applications are amongst others:

• Accurate and timely detection, nowcasting and forecasting of severe weather for aviation and other applications

• Accurate rainfall measurements and flood prediction

• Cloud and precipitation climatology's

• Understanding human effects on precipitation and climate

• Hydro-meteorological products such as flood forecasting and water Resources management

• Detect changes and differences in cloud microphysics and dynamics in time and space to determine climate and pollution effects

• Assimilation of radar data into numerical meso-scale models.

• Weather nowcasting/forecasting

• Aviation

• Water Resources Management

• Agriculture

• Industry

• Global Climate Change studies

• Pollution

• Wind energy

• Metropolitan areas

In addition new applications for the following topics will be explored as part of the talk
