What is Gender

Welcome

Welcome to the IGDS!

Gender

In 2024 the IGDS celebrates 31 years since the establishment of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies in 1993. Since our inauguration we have been working to develop integrated, interdisciplinary programmes of gender studies within the University of the West Indies. We continue to produce and disseminate knowledge based on the generation and analysis of research data on women, men, and gender-related issues in the Caribbean. We strive to establish and maintain linkages with national, regional and international institutions concerned with Gender and Development."

"The Policy is intended as a framework for creating and fostering an inclusive environment conducive to what The UWI has articulated as its Mission - advancing learning, creating knowledge and fostering innovation for the positive transformation of the Caribbean and the wider world. The University community we are now assured, is a much better place for all of us." - Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor, The University of the West Indies
