UWI Professor to Address African Ministers
Alcan Professor of Caribbean Sustainable Development at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Professor Anthony Clayton, will deliver a keynote presentation at the Inaugural African Ministerial Conference on Science and Technology for Development to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa from November 4 - 7. The conference, the first of its kind, will bring together the Ministers for Science and Technology and their key technical support staff from across Africa.
Annual World of Work Seminar
The Annual World of Work Seminar series organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services, Mona will continue on Thursday, October 23 beginning at 3:00 p.m. at SR10, Faculty of Social Sciences. This week’s seminar is “Writing Effective Resumes and Cover Letters – Two Important Tools for the Job Search”, and the presenter is Andrea Crossfield, Human Resources Director, Oceanic Digital Limited, Jamaica.
Antigua and Barbuda Conference
Bernice Lake QC, noted Anguillan Attorney and UWI Council member will deliver the keynote address at the Opening Session of the Antigua and Barbuda Conference hosted by the UWI School of Continuing Studies from November 13 to 15. The Antigua and Barbuda Conference, to be held at the Jolly Beach Resort in St. Mary’s, Antigua is the seventh in the school’s country conference series. It will focus on issues relevant to Antigua and Barbuda. Under the theme Beyond Walls: Multi-disciplinary Perspectives.
Book Launch
The Publications Section of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies is pleased to announce the publication of Erna Brodber’s book Standing Tall: Affirmations of the Jamaican Male – 24 Self-Portraits.
Evening of Elegance
The UWI Guild of Students, Mona External Affairs Committee will present An Evening of Elegance under the Patronage of Ambassador Madge Barrett on Wednesday, October 22, at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts beginning at 8:00 p.m. The evening will feature performers including: the University Singers, the Panoridim Steel Orchestra, Kevin Downswell. Admission is $600. Students with ID $350. The gate prize is a week-end for two at Sandals Montego Bay. Tickets are available at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts and the Students’ Union, UWI.
IDU Lunch Hour Discussions
The Instructional Development Unit, UWI Mona will continue its series of Lunch Hour Discussions each Thursday, until December 4 focusing on Course Design. The next in the series will be on October 22 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and the focus will be on Developing Course Objectives. The discussions are designed to familiarize participants with the process of designing and evaluating courses. Other topics in the series will be Translating Objectives through Materials Selection on November 6 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
MAPS Symposium
The Mona Association of Postgraduate Students (MAPS) will host a symposium on October 30 at 2:00 p.m. in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT). The theme will be “The Emergence of a Graduate Culture on the Mona Campus”. The speakers will include past and present graduate students form the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies.
Norma Rodney Harrack
The Main Library at UWI Mona is currently hosting an exhibition of works by noted Jamaican ceramist, Norma Rodney Harrack. The exhibition is titled From Taino to Contemporary and showcases the development of ceramics in our cultural heritage. It details examples of Jamaica’s earliest potters, the Tainos, and highlights the artist’s own personal expression of work that is contemporary. At the same time it communicates a sense of the potter’s past. The exhibition is a must see for all pottery lovers and is open for daily viewing at the Main Library until October 24.
One Stop Graduation Centre, UWI 2003 Graduates
In an effort to streamline the pre graduation process, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus will operate a ONE STOP Graduation Centre from October 21 to November 5 at the Assembly Hall, Mona. (Excluding Sundays) from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (Monday to Saturday) for: presentation of vouchers, graduation gowns, photographs, memorabilia, alumni information, collection of invitations and parking stickers.
