ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE UWI MONA GRADUATION CEREMONIES 2022

The UWI Mona congratulates the entire Graduating Class of 2022. Despite all the challenges faced on your journey, you made it and we celebrate with you and are extremely proud of your success.

As the world transitions out of the acute COVID-19 phase, we have begun to see the light at the end of the pandemic. It is against this background, that The UWI Mona is happy to announce the reintroduction of face-to-face graduation ceremonies.

40 years of Joy

Mrs Joy Spence, CD (Hon DSc, Hon LLD), distinguished alumnus of the Department of Chemistry, graduated from The University of the West Indies (UWI, Mona) in 1971. Then Joy Bateman, she holds the distinction of being the second recipient of the premier Cedric Hassall Scholarship awarded annually to the top Chemistry student. As a practicing chemist, Mrs Spence served J Wray and Nephew in several key positions from 1981, transitioning to the role of Master Blender in 1997.

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Grenada’s Senator Simon Stiell
The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulates Grenada’s Senator Simon Stiell on his new role as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat.
 
His appointment was announced by UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres on August 15. He is said to have described Senator Stiell as “a true champion” of creative approaches to tackling the global climate crisis.

UWI and National Commercial Bank Foundation partner to increase Teachers in Digital Studies

The University of the West Indies Mona has signed an Agreement with the National Commercial Bank Foundation (NCBF) to increase the number of STEM teachers in Jamaica focused on Digital Studies via the Build Out Our Stem Teachers (BOOST) Programme.

The Agreement was signed on July 28, 2022 in the Principal’s Conference Room on The UWI Mona Campus.

FST Women in STEM received Science and Technology XXtrordineers Awards

Nine Jamaican women across the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) were acknowledged and awarded plaques by the Scientific Research Council (SRC) at its inaugural Science and Technology XXtrordineers Recognition Programme on Thursday at the Terra Nova Hotel in St Andrew.

According to Executive Director, Dr Charah Watson, the S&T XXtrordineers Recognition Programme is an effort by the SRC to raise awareness about STEM and inspire participation among youngsters in the fields.

MSBM's MBA Programme RE-ACCREDITED BY PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITATION BODY, AMBA

The MBA programme offered by Mona School of Business and Management (MSBM) of the University of the West Indies, Mona has been re-accredited by the prestigious Association of MBAs (AMBA) for a period of five years, which is the longest period offered by the AMBA. This re-accreditation confirms the MSBM’s place among the top 2% of business schools globally as AMBA’s accreditation is internationally recognised as the global standard for all MBA, MBM and DBA programmes.

The UWI's Revenue Revolution strategy approved and set to take effect

Ushered by the success of the regional university’s soaring reputation over the past five years, the 2022-2027 strategic direction for The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has been approved.  Dubbed the ‘Revenue Revolution’, this second phase of The UWI Triple A Strategy was given the green light by the University Council during a special meeting of its members held on July 29 and is set to take effect from the start of the upcoming academic year.

Regional Award for The UWI's virologist hero Professor Christine Carrington

Professor Christine Carrington, Professor of Molecular Genetics and Virology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) St. Augustine Campus has officially been presented with her award as the 2022 Anthony N Sabga Caribbean Excellence Laureate for Science and Technology. She received the award from President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Paula Mae Weekes in a ceremony on June 14, 2022 at President's House in Port of Spain.

The UWI announces the appointments of new Professors in the fields of Music, Law, Astronomy, Engineering, and Medical Microbiology

The Office of Administration at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of five academics to Professors, the highest academic rank at the institution. The newly appointed are Professor David Akombo in the field of music; Professor David Berry in the field of law; Professor Shirin Haque, the first at the University in the field of astronomy; Professor Krishpersad Manohar in the field of mechanical engineering and Professor Alison Merle Nicholson in the field of Medical Microbiology.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is celebrating Professor Shirin Haque, who has made history as the first in her field to rise to the regional University’s highest academic rank. The UWI alumna is not only the first Professor in the field of Astronomy at The UWI, but also the first in the English-speaking Caribbean. In fact, she is the only professional Astronomer in the region.
