On Thursday, March 10, The University of the West Indies’ Office of the Vice-Chancellor together with The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) held a Vice-Chancellor’s Forum, examining the current situation and its implications for the global oil industry and the Caribbean.

Professor Eris D. Schoburgh has been elected unopposed to the position of Vice President of the International Research Society for Public Management (IRSPM) representing the Caribbean and Latin American Region at the latest round of elections that concluded in February 2022.

Professor Emeritus Selwyn Ryan: An icon transitions.

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, on the passing of Professor Emeritus Selwyn Ryan, renowned social scientist and former University Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at The University of the West Indies. He was also the Director of the St. Augustine Branch of the Institute from 1986 to 2003.

On Monday, March 7, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the National Baking Company Foundation in Jamaica signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide grant funding towards the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Oceanography and Blue Economy (COBE).

The 2021-2022 staging of the UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) attracted over 80 entrants with eight finalists emerging who went on to pitch their business ideas at the finals which took place on Friday January 28, 2022. The exciting event had some of UWI’s finest students and faculty vying for the top prize and the anticipation was ‘nail biting’ waiting to hear the results. After much deliberation by our independent and highly respected panel of judges, the winners were announced and prizes were handed out.

Internationally acclaimed Economic Historian, Social Justice and Minority Empowerment Activist, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, launched his latest publication on February 25. The new book, How Britain Underdeveloped the Caribbean: A Reparation Response to Europe's Legacy of Plunder and Poverty, explores how successive governments have systematically suppressed economic development in their former colonies and have refused to accept responsibility for the debt and development support they owe the Caribbean.
