The UWI Open Campus launches ‘Transcultura Programme’ with UNESCO

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus recently launched Phase One of its partnership with UNESCO’s Transcultura Programme for persons from Spanish-speaking Caribbean countries.

The programme titled “Integrating Cuba, the Caribbean and the European Union through Culture and Creativity,” is being implemented in collaboration with UNESCO’s Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean and funded by the European Union.

Xan-Xi Bethel

Xan-Xi Bethel is a product of the Simmons-Hall families from Middle Caicos in the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Bonamy-Munnings-Woodside families of Andros and Cat Island in the Bahamas. She also comes out of the Sands, Adderley, Benebee, and Bethel families of Eleuthera and Long Island in the Bahamas. These were families that held fast to notions of belonging, nation building, and service. They were an industrious and ambitious people who worked and contributed as farmers, educators, scholars, sailors, businesspeople, suffragettes, and adventurers.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has penned an agreement with Sandals Resorts International (SRI) and Florida International University’s (FIU) Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, solidifying a landmark industry-academic alignment partnership to establish a world-class tourism training institute based at the University.

Mikeann Channer is a young medical doctor with a track record of excellence. Born and raised in Montego Bay, St. James, the 24-year-old has consistently maintained a high standard in all her endeavours. Born on October 16, 1997, Mikeann was raised in a single-parent household. The love and support of her family have played an integral part in her becoming the person she is today. She is especially close to her mother who inspires and encourages her to pursue her dreams and goals. She attributes her success to date largely to God, who has been a guiding force in her life.
