The University of the West Indies Centre for Disability Studies (UWICDS) and Office of CARICOM Special Rapporteur on Disability, with support from the Commonwealth Secretariat, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Digicel Foundation recently completed its first ever regional Special Ministerial Conference for Specific Legislation for Persons with Disabilities in the Caribbean.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) congratulates the Honourable Philip J. Pierre who was sworn in as Saint Lucia’s 8th Prime Minister on July 28. Prime Minister Pierre, an Economist and UWI alumnus, led his political party to win the country’s recent general election. The UWI community is filled with great pride to have yet another member of its alumni assuming the high office of Prime Minister in the Caribbean region.

Ms Althea Gordon Appointed Open Campus Registrar

Ms. Althea Gordon has been appointed Campus Registrar of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus. Ms Gordon’s appointment takes effect on August 1, 2021. She replaces Mrs Karen Ford-Warner who retires at the end of July 2021.

Dr Francis Severin Appointed Acting Principal of the Open Campus

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Francis Severin as Interim Principal of its Open Campus effective August 1, 2021. The appointment was approved at the Annual Business Meeting of University Council held on Friday April 30, 2021 via Zoom.

The current Principal, Dr Luz Longsworth will retire on July 31 this year after serving for six years.

The UWI launches ‘Operation Revenue Revolution 75+’

On Wednesday, July 14, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, leading the University’s Executive Management Team in a strategic planning retreat, launched Operation RR75+, the second, five years of its ten-year strategic plan.

UWI and NPAJ sign MOU to boost the development of powerlifting in Jamaica

The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Academy of Sports (UWIMAS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Power Lifting Association of Jamaica Ltd (NPAJ) to establish a framework for a strategic partnership for the development and promotion of powerlifting to enhance human resource development and promote health and wellness for the social and economic benefit of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean societies.

The signing took place at The UWI Mona on Thursday, July 15, 2021.
