Integrating Alternative Energy

Semester 2

This course provides for an analysis of electrical power systems and includes stand-alone and grid connected systems, generator characteristics, networking, load flow analysis, and power electronic interfaces. It describes the various policies and economics that are related to integrating different energy sources. Students will be required to perform an investigative study of the latest developments in integrating alternative energy sources and the policies that guide them.

  • Electrical energy systems and their connectivity
  • Generator characteristics and applications
  • Networking and transmission of electricity
  • Power control and management
  • Application of power electronics devices
  • Regulations, policies, Kyoto and Copenhagen protocols and emission targets
  • Energy economics and the pricing of electricity

PHYS3671 and PHYS3681
Evaluation: 

The course assessment will be as follows:

  • One 2-hour final written examination                         50%
  • Two 1-hour in-course test                                           20%
  • Six graded tutorials (equal weighting)                        10%
  • One seminar-based group presentation                       20%

The grading for the group seminar will be distributed as follows:

  • Individual contribution (15%)
  • Team work (5%)
Learning Objectives: 

On the successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • describe how different electrical energy devices may be integrated into  an electrical grid
  • identify the problems of integrating wind and solar into an electrical grid
  • outline the principles of electricity pricing and describe the policies regarding electrical power generation and distribution
  • explain the concepts of net-metering, net-billing and wheeling
  • perform configuration analyses of generators, networks, control mechanisms and power electronic devices
