About the Renewable Energy Group

The Alternate Energy Research Group (AERG) is an established body within the Physics Department at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. The AERG conducts funded projects and provides consultancy services to private and public sector entities. The group is made up of students, academic staff, and certified professionals who are geared towards facilitating the implementation of alternative energy in Jamaica. The group also conducts energy audits and provides expert advice on energy efficiency measures.

Background

What is this “Alternative Energy” we speak of? Alternative energy sources are any energy source that is not derived from fossil fuel. It is comprised of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. Renewable sources include, but are not limited to solar, wind and hydropower, all of which derived their energy from the sun directly or indirectly. These sources of energy have become increasingly popular over the last few decades as a result of the uncertainties surrounding the future availability of fossil fuels. The world is currently transitioning from an era dependent on fossil fuels, to a future dominated by alternative energy sources. The AERG functions to assist in facilitating this transition within the Caribbean.

Mission Statement

The mission statement of the AERG is “to increase the public awareness and implementation of alternative energy technology in Jamaica and the Caribbean”.
