Biomedical Statistics and Informatics

Semester 1

To provide the student with the useful applications of statistics in medical diagnostics, therapy, and health facilities. To provide an introduction to some of the basic components of the hospital information system.

    • Types of data and presentation.
    • Frequency distribution and summery measures.
    • Statistical investigations.
    • Sampling distributions. Hypothesis testing.
    • Analysis of variance. Curve fitting.
    • Regression and correlation.
    • Methods based on rank order.
    • SPSS introduction and usage.
  • Biomedical informatics
    • Health electronic records.
    • Decision support applications.
    • Medical imaging applications.
    • Medical and biological signal applications.
    • Databases, digital libraries and literature retrieval.
    • Telehealth and telemedicine.
    • Computer-aided surgery, medical robotics and virtual reality.
    • Medical and health software systems.
    • Languages and development platforms.
    • Internet eProjects.
    • Clinical research informatics.
    • Standards, coding and nomenclature.

Learning Objectives: 

After completing the course, the student should be able to:
• discuss the basics of biostatistics models and methods:
• evaluate and apply the appropriate statistical techniques to the different areas of medical physics.
• describe and demonstrate competency in basic computer architecture, periphery and programmes for patient records, coding, and data presentation
