Double Decade Research Celebration for UWI Mona Campus in 2019

Kingston, Jamaica:  Wednesday February 6, 2019 will see the UWI Mona Campus celebrating the 20th staging of its annual Research Days exposition. A highly anticipated three-day event on the institution’s calendar, Research Days allows the public to learn about scores of research projects being undertaken by the institution and how those projects are helping to propel personal, corporate and national development across the region.

About UWI Research Days 2019

 As a regional institution, The University of the West Indies sees its mandate not only through academic instruction but also in making academia relevant to real life, through the application of research. For the past 20 years The University through its Research Days Exposition has been making significant impact on local, regional, and even international development. Just recently, the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked The UWI in the elite band of the top 5% of universities worldwide, this ranking based in large part on the university’s research portfolio.

2019 MONA RESEARCH VILLAGE

The Village is an interactive and participatory themed exhibition for visitors to explore and learn more about our research. Special exhibits will also pinpoint contributions made by Mona researchers to Policy development, spotlight upcoming researchers, and unveil emerging studies. Open to the Public, visiting students and campus community.

A Night with the Stars

Overview: A night time stargazing activity with the Astronomy club. Meet after dark to stargaze. Two short talks about rockets and satellites and the cosmos by Louis-Ray Harris and L. Nathan Henderson Participants will be able to view different constellations and planets through the telescope.

Academic Research and Funding the Enterprise: A Look at Key Strategies for Success

Overview: The Seminar will provide effective tools for writing viable research proposals for funding; and present strategies for transferring research results into the marketplace

Mission Accomplished the TMRI story

Overview: The TMRU was established in 1956 with the goal to deliver high quality research and service that eventually addressed regional and global issues related to malnutrition. The TMRU is one of the Units under the Caribbean Institute of Health Research (CAIHR) formerly known as the Topical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI). The TMRU has revolutionised the management and care of malnutrition and was the first to develop a practical manual for the World Health Organization (WHO) on the management of malnutrition.

POETRY CLASH

Poetry Clash provides a platform for aspiring poets to share their talents at this event. UWI students, graduates and Poets from across the island will perform original poetry. Poets selected to advance will perform to a supportive and enthusiastic audience. The audience will select 4 poets to advance and there will be a judge's pick, as well. Poets! The top three contestants will receive cash prizes.
