Clinical and Therapeutic Implications of Histone Acetylation in Breast Cancer

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.297
Pages:
337-44
Synopsis:
The role of epigenetic changes with special focus on histone modifying enzymes in breast cancer is explored. Blending both epigenetic anomalies and genome instability is suggested as useful tool for breast cancer diagnosis. A basic understanding of HAT and HDACs families is required in designing potential cancer therapeutics.

A Review of Clostridium difficile Infection at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica

Issue:
DOI:

Pages:
413–8
Synopsis:
Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) per total stool samples and per total admissions increased at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica. Although most cases were nosocomial, there was a greater than expected frequency of community acquired CDI. Ceftazidime was the most common antibiotic associated with CDI.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This study examined the frequency of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) among hospital admission and diarrhoeal stool samples over a six-year period.

Mini-review: Obesity in Caribbean Youth

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.379
Pages:
250–62
Synopsis:
This paper addresses causes and strategies to combat the tsunami of obesity in Caribbean youth and explain how hitherto-overlooked components, such as non-genetic transgenerational effects, genetics, pathogens, and obesogens lead to obesity. We estimated the annual economic obesity burden at 68.5 billion USD.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Our focus was on the determination of the growing number of youths of every race and ethnicity, diagnosed with obesity and its co-morbidities in the Caribbean. We reviewed the causes and strategies to combat obesity, and the implications of the fast food industry in enabling the escalation of obesity.
