The hydro-alcoholic extract of the leaves of Prosopis farcta was evaluated for hepatoprotective and antioxidant activities in rats submitted to a high-fat diet. Oral administration of extract of Prosopis farcta leaves resulted in significant amelioration of the altered indices.

Objective: To determine the hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects of hydro-alcoholic extract of Prosopis farcta (P farcta) leaves on high fat diet-fed (HFDF) rats.

INTRODUCTION

The use of energy drinks has significantly increased in the Caribbean and worldwide as aggressive marketing campaigns target adolescents and young adults. More than 30% of adolescents reported using energy drinks and surveys have revealed that energy drinks are consumed by 30% to 50% of adolescents and young adults (1, 2). In a study in college students, 51% of participants reported consuming greater than one energy drink each month (3).

Cumulative total body irradiation caused subtle but significant changes in serum lipids, electrolytes and protein which may be due to non-specific stress reactions. As such, they are important markers in the diagnosis of radiation induced injury.


ABSTRACT

Objective: Serum lipid and electrolyte imbalances are common in critically ill patients undergoing radiation therapy. Although multiple disease states and medication may be responsible for the development of these disorders, the aim of this research is to sequentially document the effect of total body radiation on body function utilizing the sequential changes in the serum lipids, electrolytes and protein in rats.

Effect of Moderate Ethanol Administration on Biochemical Indices in Streptozotocin-diabetic Wistar Rats

Moderate ethanol administration did not affect fasting blood glugose and HbA1c, but altered the lipid profile of streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Moderate ethanol intake may further increase the risk of complications in diabetes.
