Employment Opportunity | Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in Mycology-Phytopathology

The Department of Life Sciences has active research programmes in ecological and conservation based areas as well as, among others, biotechnology, plant metabolomics, entomology, parasitology and pest and weed management. Currently the Department offers two BSc programmes, five undergraduate majors, three MSc programmes and has a large cadre of MPhil and PhD students. The department has 22 laboratories and two marine/field stations on the north and south coast of Jamaica. Research plots, a botanical garden and a herbarium are located on the campus. The successful candidate will be based at the Mona Campus.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Teach, research and participate in the strategic planning and management of teaching and learning, including curricula development programmes within the Department and wider Faculty;
  • Contribute to the life of the University and to advance teaching, research and community outreach;
  • Lecture at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise and train postgraduate students;
  • Develop a strong research programme in their area of specialization;
  • Participate in outreach activities at the Departmental/Faculty/Campus and University level;
  • Contribute to public service or national advisory boards and committees.

 Essential Qualifications and Experience:   

  • Minimum of a Ph.D. in Mycology or Phytopathology;
  • Demonstrated scholarly research;
  • At least five (5) years’ experience of teaching in the related areas at the tertiary level.

 Candidates who possess the following will be at a distinct advantage:

  • Certificate in University Teaching;
  • Experience supervising MPhil/PhD students;
  • Evidence of prior grant acquisition;
  • Administrative Experience within an Academic Institution;
  • Evidence of Curriculum Development (face to face or distant delivery modes);
  • Evidence of contribution to the Public Service OR field of Study;
  • Possess a research record commensurate to academic career as demonstrated by publications in peer reviewed journals with appreciable impact factors.
