FST Science and Industry – Cows & Climate!

“What does that have to do with the price of milk?”

If you have ever wondered whether excessive heat, dry days and/or drought has any impact on livestock productivity in Jamaica we may soon have a better idea. In a novel study being undertaken by FST scientists and facilitated by the IADB sponsored Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (Regional Track), the impact of climate change on the dairy industry is being investigated. The aim is to quantify in real terms how climatic variations have and will impact this component of the Agricultural sector, and to use the results as the basis for developing adequate and workable mitigation strategies.

The work is being done by regional animal science expert Cicero H. O. Lallo in conjunction with the Climate Studies Group, Mona (Dept. of Physics). Government and industry partners are The Bodles Research Station (Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries) and Serge Island Dairies. It is hoped that the first set of results will be available by August 2019 when the project ends.
