Physics Grad students get Antigua Internship

Mr. Dudley Williams

In January 2020, the Department of Environment (DOE) within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and the Environment in Antigua and Barbuda issued a call for Caribbean students to apply for internships related to the environment. The DOE is the national focal point for the multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) to which the Antigua and Barbuda is Party and manages projects within four main programmes: (i) Climate Change (Adaptation, Mitigation, and Capacity Building) (ii) Biodiversity (iii) Pollution and (iv) Monitoring, Evaluation and Data Management. Two Physics Postgraduate Students, Santana Lewis and Dudley Williams, were chosen from the competitive call and are currently doing a 3 months internship with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda in the DOE. They are currently working in the capacity of renewable energy consultants aiding  Antigua and Barbuda in meeting its Paris Agreement goals for reducing greenhouse gases emission by 2030 and increasing their resilience against the effects of climate change. The aim of the internship is to meet concrete outputs and targets of the programmes and projects of the DOE while at the same time providing the students with real life experience in the demanding field of environment. Because of the current pandemic the students have been doing much of their work remotely with hopes to travel to Antigua if the possibility opens up before the end of the internship. Congrats.

Ms. Santana Lewis
