Led by Professor Caryl James, this project is a randomized controlled trial aimed at determining how AI relational accountability and engagement can be used to improve student wellness. We are recruiting university student volunteers aged 18 and older. We are providing this information to invite you to participate. Please take your time to decide if you wish to be part of this research opportunity.

This study offers a confidential, flexible way for students to contribute to vital research while gaining access to valuable support resources.
The app that will be used in the study is Inner Peak, which is a comprehensive and secure mental wellness app supporting students through four core features. Students gain access to 14 AI-powered digital wellness coaches who provide supportive listening and recommend personalized content from a therapist-created library. The app encourages consistency through daily check-ins, allowing students to track their mood and metrics and receive monthly "mood in reviews" with analytics. For deeper support, students are recommended engaging, TikTok-style videos (2-3 minutes) created by licensed therapists. Most importantly, Inner Peak includes a vital Crisis Protocol: it monitors for concerning language, assesses risk using the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, and immediately connects students to crisis resources while notifying relevant contacts.
This study is designed to be entirely anonymous and conducted remotely, meaning students can participate from anywhere at any time that is convenient for them. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old and possess an iPhone or Android device. The commitment involves minimal weekly activities over a 4-week period. In return for your participation, you can earn up to a $20 US Amazon gift card and will receive free access to mental wellness support resources.
