UWI Model UN (UWIMUN) team wins big at Harvard Model UN Competition

UWI Mona Model UN team

The Faculty of Social Sciences commends The UWI Model United Nations (UWIMUN) team which recently won five (5) awards at the recently held Harvard Model UN Competition in Washington from February 14th to 21st , 2023.

Model United Nations or Model UN is a simulation of the UN General Assembly and other multilateral bodies. In Model UN, students act as ambassadors from UN member states to debate current issues on the organization’s agenda. Essentially, a team of students, called “delegates”, attends conferences held by other universities and represents a specific country or individual. In traditional “General Assembly” committees, each student represents a specific country (for example the UWI delegate could be the United States and the Yale delegate could be India), and participates in a specific committee.

For this competition our students’ awards included Diplomatic Commendation in the Social and Humanitarian and Cultural Committee, Outstanding Delegate in the Special Political Decolonization Committee, and Most Outstanding Small Delegation in the Overall Competition. We extend our heartiest congratulations to the five members’ team which include Celeste Nottingham, Gabryelle Smalling (FSS), Alana Robinson (FSS), Rhameish Smith and Moses Estick (FSS) and to Mr Glenville McLeod and Mr Howard Reid of the Department of Government, who were the Faculty Advisors and chaperones. These five (5) awards take the total won by the UWI teams, since our first participation, to a total of 30 awards.

We'd like to again congratulate the Model UN team on their win!!
