UWI Gatorade Invitational Meet

Local elite athletes are expected to make their season’s debut during the special Olympic Development session at the 8th UWI Gatorade Invitational Track Meet which takes place on Saturday, February 20, 2010 starting at 9 am at the National Stadium. The line up also includes a dynamic team of High Performance Training Centre athletes from Costa Rica, athletes from the Netherland Antilles, The Cayman Islands and the Bahamas, collegiate teams and top high school athletes from Holmwood Technical, Edwin Allen, Vere Technical, Kingston College, Calabar High, Jamaica College and St. Jago High.

Grace Jackson, Meet Director and Chair of Organizing Committee outlines that the UWI Gatorade Invitational Meet is “especially important as it is among the few Meets which provides an early opportunity and preparation for senior athletes while allowing junior athletes an occasion to showcase their skill.”

 The Meet is expected to see approximately two thousand participants from ninety teams competing in a range of events including 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, High Jump, Triple Jump, Long Jump, Discus, Shot Put, 4x400m and Hurdles.

Four individuals are being honoured at this year’s UWI Gatorade Invitational Track Meet namely:
•    Dr. Thelora Reynolds, Director, Student Services and Development at UWI, Mona for contribution to the development of Sports at UWI, Mona over the past 10 years.
•    Sherika Williams, 400m elite athlete for her noteworthy contribution to Jamaica as an elite athlete that is locally bred.
•    Pat Lue-Chin, physiotherapist for her dedication and physical care to UWI athletes and national athletes for over the past 25 years.
•    Ricky McIntosh, starter for his tireless assistance to UWI, Mona Track Meets and Sports day for the past 8 years.

Tickets for the UWI Invitational cost J $350 for adults, J $150 for children under 12 and UWI students and staff with ID J $250.
