UWI and JaBA Signs MOU

Members of the UWI Team along side Members of JaBA

The University of the West Indies Mona Campus under the distinguished patronage of Professor Gordon Shirley, Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the university, this morning signed a three-year Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the Jamaica Basketball Association (JaBA).

In their press release JaBA says: "The MOU formalizes and consolidates the relationship with the UWI, strengthening our bonds and our collective vision to advance basketball and sports in Jamaica. This partnership is a testament to the work and vision of up and coming leaders like Dalton Myers and facilities manager Andenis Simms along with UWI's distinguished sports board who realize the vast potential of academic and sport intertwined and how that fabric can weave success for UWI and the nation."

Director of Sports, Dalton Myers in bringing greetings noted that he was excited about the partnership. "This is a part of a bold and positive step in the development of sports in Jamaica through the signing of this MOU. Through this collaboration, athletes, basketballers and UWI students will benefit significantly. They will be exposed to top coaches; top administration and learning different things... we (UWI) are contributing to the development of athletes, sports and basketball in Jamaica."

President of JaBA, Ajani Williams commended the University for its development in Academics and

Athletics. The MOU for him "forges a new frontier, new direction not just for basketball but for sports. We are trying to create superbly smart, socially conscious athletes, administration and managers. We believe in the holistic development of athletes."

Although many perceive basketball to be an indoor sport, it can be played outdoors as well. This relationship with UWI and JaBa will aid in the development of another indoor facility to help to develop the sport the right way.

Professor Gordon Shirley in his address expressed pleasure in being apart of such a venture. "Mona has always been involved in these partnerships. We believe that there is a need for enhancement of our facilities although we already have the coaches. We are about creating an academy here at Mona...It is possible to develop athletes right here at home, this collaboration will see the sharing of knowledge, vision and sports and that is what makes it so important to us here at UWI."
