UWI Scholarship Media Brunch

Under the distinguished patronage of Principal and Pro Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies, Professor Gordon Shirley, Deputy Principal, Professor Archibald McDonald and Student Services and Development Manager, Ms. Rose Cameron, the UWI Sports Department hosted the official launch and introduction of the new cohort of Scholarship student athletes for the Academic Year 2012/2013.

A total of thirty-three scholarships were awarded scholarships in cricket, track and field, football, netball, table tennis. Among the 2012 awardees were Olympian Traves Smikkle, World Junior Championships national representative Stefan Fennell, national 400 meter representative Ristananna Tracey, Sunshine Girl Vanessa Walker and Shuraffadean Thomas first female football scholarship recipient.

The UWI Scholarship Program has been in existence since 2008, currently there are seventy student athletes enrolled in the program inclusive of former and present National representatives. The Scholarship programme offers both full and half scholarship covering tuition and/or accommodation. The program also facilitates Sports Psychology sessions, a nutrition program and a medical program. 

The scholarship program is aimed at providing support to persons who are motivated to improve the social, intellectual and economic environments in their home countries and to further become flag bearers and sports ambassadors.
