The University of the West Indies have partnered with the Caribbean Broilers Group to stage the inaugural UWI/5K Walk/Run. The event is set to be staged on November 18, 2012.

The race was developed out of a need for additional tertiary education funding for students who possess a gift in athletics and a academically gifted as well but whose dreams are sometimes shattered because of the inability to meet their financial obligations.

All proceeds from the race will go directly toward the development of sports and education of the most talented and in-need students here at UWI Mona. The scholarships will benefit students who are entering University, as well as those who encounter unforeseen financial emergencies while enrolled. Currently there are over 70 student athletes enrolled in our program, this annual 5K will provide a steady flow of funding for these scholarships. 

The UWI Mona Sports Department in acknowledging the importance of sports, particularly track and field to Jamaica, its power in unifying our nation, the hope it provides to our people, the joy it brings to our friends and families, and the glory it brings to our country's nation. The UWI Mona is on a drive to enhance its approach to athletics development. The UWI Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence is home to the world's best, Jamaica's glory- a highly motivated group of young persons who want to make a difference as the future of Jamaica's sporting powerhouses.
