PELICANS COP TOP SPOTS AT UWI INVITATIONAL 2015

The Usain Bolt Track/UWI Mona Bowl came alive on Saturday March 21, 2015 as several teams gathered for the 14th staging of the UWI Track Field Invitational Meet. The meet showcased the some of the best of the country’s track and field talent at the collegiate and Olympic division level.

UWI Mona was made proud as our Pelicans shone in various track events. Pelican Jamar McNaughton finished 1st place in the men 400m hurdles and Jariel Cherrington and Sherwin Jackson finished top 10 in the same event. Ruchell Clayton placed 2nd in the women’s 400m hurdles.

Jodean Williams, Satina Edwards and Shacquiera Wright secured tops spots at 1st, 3rd and 4th places in the women 200m run in the collegiate category. Meanwhile in the male event of that category, Odail Todd came in 3rd and Bernado Brady finished in the top 10. Jodean also placed 1st in the women’s 400m collegiate run. Fellow pelican Jhacia Salmon also copped 1st place in the 1500m run. Nikeisha Grant and Alicia Higgins both finished in 3rd place positions in the 800m and 3000m runs respectively.

In the male category, Jowayne Hibbert finished the men 1500m run in 2nd place with Pelican Spencer Deleveaux finishing close behind in 4th place. Bernardo Brady also secured an impressive 2nd place position in the 100m dash for the collegiate category. Robin Rowe ended the 5000m run in 3rd place.

Excellence in the field Our athletes also made phenomenal strides in the field at the meet with excellence from both our male and female contenders.

Fredrick Dacres recorded a season-best distance in the discus event with a throw of 66.40m. Fellow Pelican Traves Smikle snatched the 2nd place position in that event with a throw of 57.58m. Their female colleagues Isheka Binns, Regyeam Ellis and Syriece Jones all finished in top 10 spots.

Pelican Jellani Bogle was the 1st place winner for the men triple jump category. Another 1st place victory was secured by Ackeem Robertson in the high jump event, while Fredrick and Christopher Brown placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the shotput event.

Misha-Gaye DaCosta was the 1st place winner in the high jump event for her category. Isheka placed 2nd in the women javelin throw event.

Demoy Henry, Zavaan Richards and Rahjel Brown secured top 10 places in the male javelin throw event. Daniel Sutherland and Syriece Jones also finshed top 10 in the women shot put category.

The Sports Department wishes to extend a hearty congratulations to all athletes who competed at this year’s meet.
