PELICANS’ STALEMATE AT THE COMPLEX

UWI FC Pelicans held Tivoli Gardens to a nil all scoreline. They played with only 10 men in the last half hour on Sunday in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) football match at the Edward Seaga Complex. UWI lost defensive midfielder, Deno Schaffe to a red card in the 59th minute but was able to hold Tivoli at bay until full time. The match truly showed that football is a contact sport as both teams went head to head from the start of the game. The match condition was windy which did not facilitate attractive football and as a result the match was riddled with hard tackles. There was a tussle for midfield supremacy with Tivoli gradually gaining control of the middle of the park. UWI’s defence proved that they were worthy of their current standing in points table as they were able to withstood all that Tivoli had to offer playing with a man down. UWI’s Coach Marcel Gayle was pleased with the overall performance of his team as he emphasized that his team showed “a gutsy performance and stuck with the game plan despite a red card.” The results of the match has pushed UWI back in their attempt to make the semi-finals of the league. They have maintained their 5th place position with 39 points in the standings. Tivoli Gardens are now in 8th place with only 5 points ahead of the relegation zone.
