Breast Cancer Receptor Profiles in Jamaica: A 6-year Analysis

Synopsis: 
This is the first report of the University of the West Indies (UWI) breast cancer immunohistochemistry (IHC) receptor database in which we present the results of tests performed during the six year period following its establishment in 2002, and investigate the associations between receptor profile and patient age, tumour grade and stage.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the breast cancer immunohistochemistry (IHC) receptor status for tests performed at the University of the West Indies (UWI) from January 2002 to December 2007 and to investigate for an association between receptor profile and patient age, tumour grade and stage.

Suicide Attempt by Self-poisoning: Characteristics of Suicide Attempters Seen at the Emergency Room at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Synopsis: 
Of the sample of 127 patients seen for attempted suicide by self-poisoning, 75.6% were females. The age cohort 16–30 years represented the largest number of cases (70.8%).

ABSTRACT

Objective: To document the characteristics of self-poisoning suicide attempters who were brought to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) Emergency Room and to outline the type of drug used in the attempt.

Role of Routine Chest Radiographs in the Evaluation of Patients with Stable Blunt Chest Trauma – A Prospective Analysis

The study sought to assess the test performance characteristics of clinical judgement in the evaluation of stable blunt chest trauma patients compared with chest radiography in the determination of significant intra-thoracic injury. The study revealed that physicians in the local emergency department may be over-utilizing chest radiographs for patients who had stable blunt chest trauma.

The Prevalence and Significance of Oestrogen Receptor (ER) Positivity in Breast Cancer at the University Hospital of the West Indies, Jamaica

Synopsis: 
Oestrogen receptor (ER) status was positive in 125 (63%) and negative in 74 (37%) patients diagnosed with breast cancer. By comparing the cohorts of ER negative to ER positive patients, one can accurately identify which clinical variables bear clinical significance in this population and are affected by ER status, as well as impact patient outcome.

ABSTRACT

 Objective:  To identify the prevalence of oestrogen receptor (ER) positivity, and determine the relationship of ER status with patient and tumour characteristics, in patients with breast cancer.
