Zachary Williams successfully completes his MPhil Applied Physics Degree

The Department of Physics congratulates Mr. Zachary Williams who has been awarded an M.Phil. (Applied Physics) Degree. The title of his thesis is "Renewable energy for desalination process: Efficiency and environmental impacts in a tropical island using digital tools".  The thesis investigates using desalination to produce freshwater in a tropical island (in this case, Jamaica) powered by renewable energy sources. As there are several available renewable energy sources, focus is placed on solar, wind and wave and the combination of these three sources that can power a desalination plant. Numerical modeling is used to determine the best mix of renewable energy sources as well the best location of the plant based on several factors such as environmental impacts and rainfall distribution. The hope is that this thesis can be a precursor to further work on desalination to provide potable water to areas where water reserves are severely impacted by climate change.

He was supervised by Dr. Jean-François Dorville (Guadeloupe).  Prof. Michael Taylor was a member of his supervisory Committee.
