CAPE Workshop 2022

The Department of Physics hosted its annual CAPE workshop virtually on  January 3-6, 2022. There were 216 students learning Simple Harmonic Motion and Waves (CAPE Unit 1) and 198 students learning Operational Amplifiers (CAPE Unit 2) from 22 schools across the island. The students were introduced to the UWI and welcomed by members of the Faculty of Science and Technology and UWI Marketing team in a general session. Our young Physics hopefuls spent the remainder of their day engaging with staff and alumni on the theoretical principles of their topics before embarking on practical laboratory activities with the departments postgraduate students.

The workshop is one of the major outreach activities organized and implemented by the department each year to assist secondary students' in their exit examinations and spark interest in joining the department family to the undergraduate level. This year the department in partnership with the Faculty of Science and Technology, The school of education and the ministry of education added a teacher focused aspect where pedagogy and content support were provided on the CAPE Unit 1 and 2 topics that were covered in the student session. The department works to support Physics learning at as many levels as possible and is pleased with the response, participation and interests from the students and the teachers.
