Physics with Education (BSc.)

Programme Overview

The BSc. in Physics with Education Studies is developed around existing courses from the Department of Physics, and the School of Education. Physics is studied in depth to bring participants' expertise up to degree level, while also learning how to teach physics to a standard that leads to trained graduate status. The courses in the programme cover the central ideas and developments of pure and applied physics and offers an ideal start for anyone wanting to pursue a physics teaching  career by consolidating and extending ones physics skills. Simultaneously, enough experience is gained in schools as the education students component of the degree involvess both the practical side of teaching and the theoretical aspects of the profession. This programme is designed to accommodate two strands of students. That is, students who are initially being trained as teachers, and students who come with prior teacher training qualification. Students pursuing this programme are required to take a minimum of sixty (60) advanced credits.

Programme Objectives

The BSc. programme in Physics with Education Studies aims to:

  1. Prepare garduates for careers in, but not limited to: teaching, financial services, health, government, business, telecommunications and research;
  2. Prepare students to undertake further study in Physics and Physics Education at the graduate level;
  3. Familiarise students with educational technology;
  4. Provide a good grounding in the best practices in the discipline;
  5. Develop graduates' understanding of Physics;
  6. Develop students' personal skills and professional qualities;
  7. Emphasise transferable skills e.g. team work, find solutions to problems, express problems in mathematical language, organise and manage time effectively, communicate Physics ideas clearly and succinctly, think logically and construct logical arguments, work with abstract concepts, adapt and motivate and much more.
