McLaughlin Actuarial Scholarship fst

 

 

The Award is available to register students:

  1. Any undergraduate enrolled in the actuarial science programme at The UWI Mona or The UWI St. Augustine.
  2. Any nationality
  3. Undergraduate 
US$3,000 to a final year student, US $2,000 to a second-year student, and US $1,000 additional to a student from either year. Three (3) scholarships awarded annually One (1) Year (Second year students are eligible to reapply for final year)

The Award is based on:

  1. Academic Performance - minimum of GPA 3.0 for continuing students
  2. Merit-based not needs-based
  3. Involvement in co-curricular/community/employment/leadership roles and activities considered
  4. Commitment to the profession is also considered
  1. Applicants are short-listed on the basis of performance in   Advanced Level GCE/CAPE Examination or University Examination results as at May 31st of the academic year;
  2. Instead of interviews we evaluate completed applications by a committee of experienced fully qualified actuaries.

Applicants are required to provide:

  1. Completed standard UWI application form
  2. A Personal Essay stating why the candidate should be considered
  3. Two letters of recommendation one academic and the other a personal reference.
  4. A transcript issued from The UWI
  5. A list of professional exams enrolled or taken, if any, and grades

The scholarship covers tuition with any remaining funds paid towards housing, food, transportation, and other expenses relating to education. Awards are merit-based not needs-based.

The duration of each award is one year.

A second year student who has received an award may apply again for their final year.

There is also a US$500.00 bonus award available for each Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) or Society of Actuaries (SOA) exam passed while enrolled in the Actuarial Science Programme at the University of the West Indies or within 9 months of graduating from that programme.

This scholarship was formerly called the Caribbean Actuarial Scholarship in honour of Basil L. and Monica G. Virtue, established by their son-in-law S. Michael McLaughlin. It has been in effect for more than 15 years with over 40 scholarships awarded to students from countries around the Caribbean region. In 2025 the name has been changed and administration is moving to UWI OSF.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES SCHOLARSHIP (THE) medsci

The award is available to Jamaican nationals who are:

 

    • registered students at the Mona Campus;
    • pursuing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
J$100,000.00 One (1) One (1) year

The award will be based on:

 

    • good academic performance in University examinations (GPA of at least 3.0);
    • demonstrable financial need.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the University comminty and the Donor company-Medical Technologies Ltd.

Michelle Wilson Memorial Bursary

The award is available to any student enrolled in the undergraduate nursing programme.

Up to JMD $100,000 One (1) per annum One (1) year

The award will be based on:

  • verifiable financial need;
  • involvement in co-curricular and/or community activities and volunteerism;
  • students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 from the previous academic year (if registered in years 2 to 4 of the programme)

 

Candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the University of the West Indies, Mona and the Donor.

Miss Birdie/Purity Scholarship for Business & Management socsci

The award is available to Jamaican nationals who are: 

  • pursuing an undergraduate degree (B.Sc) in the Department of Management Studies;
  • Entering the final (3rd) year of study. 
$300,000.00 One (1) One (1) year

The recipient must give back 40-hours voluntary service to UWIDEF or any office at UWI Mona or UHWI

The award will be based on:

  • Academic performance based on the results of the previous year University examinations (minimum GPA of 3.0);
  • Verifiable financial need;
  • Active participation in co-curricular activities;
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, volunteerism and social involvement.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel consisting of representatives from Consolidated Bakeries Jamaica  Ltd and the UWI Development and Endowment Fund.

The selected candidate must be able to represent the Purity and Miss Birdie Brand by maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle as well as to demonstrate kindness towards persons in their community. 

MSBM 10th Anniversary Undergraduate Scholarship socsci

The award is available to registered full-time students at the Mona Campus who are:

  •  Jamaican Nationals;
  • pursuing a first degree at Mona School of Business and Management;
  • in the final year of their degree programme. 

 

J $300,000 each Five (5) One (1) year

The award will be based on:

  • high academic achievement having a minimum GPA of 3.5 from the previous academic year;
  • demonstrable  leadership qualities;
  • ability to provide evidence of involvement in co-curricular/community activities.

 

  • The scholarship would be advertised on the MSBM’s website, Social Media pages and Mona Messaging. 
  • Applicants short-listed based on their overall academic performance, evidence of financial need is not required.
  • Candidates would be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the Office of Student Financing, MSBM, including member(s) of the Management Team, Coordinator(s) and Accounting Team. 
  • Two (2) references, the OSF reference form and one other written reference

MSBM Alumni Association Bursary

The recipient should be:

    • A Jamaican National 
    • A student of the Mona School of Business and Management 
    • A second or third year student 
    • 20-25 years old 
JMD $50,000.00 One (1) or Two (2) One (1) year

The recipent should:

    • have varifiable financial need;
    • have a minimum of 3.5 GPA
    • should be able to provide evidence of involvement in co-curricular/community activities 
    • The scholarship will be advertised on the University's website;
    • Applicants will be short-listed on the basis of their academic performance in Year 2 or Year 3 of University Examination;
    • Candidates will be interviews by a panel comprising personnel from University and the Donors.
National Association of Jamaica and Supportive Organization (NAJASO)/ Marcus Mosiah Garvey Scholarship fst, humed, socsci

The award is available to Jamaican nationals who are: 

  • residing in Jamaica;
  • enrolled in level I of the degree programme at Mona Campus;
  • in the Faculties of Humanities & Education (Arts-based only), Science & Technology, Social Sciences.
To be decided by Donor One (1) Three (3) Years

The recipient is required to serve in Jamaica for a minimum period of three (3) years immediately following graduation. 

The award is based on: 

  • high acadenic performance;
  • leadership qualities;
  • verifiable financial need.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from UWI. 

National Baking Company Foundation Scholarship fst

The award is available to Jamaican Nationals who are:

  • registered, full time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Science & Technology
  • pursuing studies in Biochemistry
  • entering second year or third year
$276,000.00 One (1) Two (2) years

The selected candidate is expected to complete 24 hours of voluntary seervice with the National Baking Company.  In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to complete four weeks summer intenship with National Baking Company. 

The award will be based on:

    • Academic performance based on the results of the previous year University examinations (minimum GPA of 3.5);
    • Demonstrate leadership qualities, volunteerism and social involvement.

Shortlisted candidates shall be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the University and the Donor organization.

Nationwide News Network Scholarship for Governance socsci

The award is available to students who are: 

    • registered full time in the Faculty of Social Sciences; 
    • majoring in Political Science, Public Sector Management or International Relations;
J $125,000.00 One (1) One (1) year

The recipient is expected to complete 100 hours of internship with Nationwide News Network

The award will be based onL 

    • strong academic performance (at least a GPA of 3.0); 
    • demonstrable financial need; 
    • verifiable involvment in co-curricular/community activities;
    • leadership qualities

Shortlisted candidates shall be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the University and the Donor organization. 

Nationwide News Network Scholarship for Journalism humed

The award is available to students who are:

    • registered full time in the Faculty of Humanities & Education; 
    • majoring in Journalism;
J $125,000.00 One (1) One (1) year

The recipient is expected to complete 100 hours of internship with Nationwide News Network.

The award will be based on: 

    • strong academic performance (at least a GPA of 3.0)
    • demonstrable financial need;
    • verifiable involvement in co-curricular /community activities; 
    • leadership qualities 

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by a panel comprising personnel from the University and the Donor Organization
