Approval was granted by the Campus F&GPC in the 2023/2024 AY for establishing a Fiscal Research Centre (FRC) within the Department of Economics. Through the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, the Government of Jamaica has pledged an endowment of $200,000,000 to support the Centre, which develops public finance research competence.
As a nonpartisan academic think-tank, the FRC will conduct high-level, rigorous research in public finance and expand postgraduate programmes in public finance and public policy. It aims to contribute to regional capacity building and assist fiscal authorities in developing sound fiscal policies, thereby promoting fiscal discipline.
The FRC will also enhance the Department of Economics’ efforts to advance the Caribbean community. Collaborations with IDB and the University of Ottawa’s IFSD further strengthen its research impact and international partnerships. The official launch was on October 22, 2024 and solidifies the FRC’s role in evidence-based fiscal policymaking and Caribbean economic advancement.
