This study investigated the association of radiological abnormalities and asymptomatic bacteriuria in patients with sickle cell disease. No association was seen and there was no increased risk of symptomatic urinary tract infections in these patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) in sickle cell disease (SCD) in Jamaica is 5.3%. This study sought to determine the association between ASB and anatomical urological abnormalities and symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Degenerative Disc Disease of the Lumbar Spine on MRI

Degenerative Disc Disease of the lumbar spine occurred in older and heavier patients. Gender did not affect the presence or the extent of the disease. However, compared to females, males showed a marginally increased tendency to have degenerative disc disease at L1/2 and L5/S1.

A prospective study, using CT scans, has determined that the absence of amnesia, loss of consciousness, vomiting and ENT bleed in the history and a Glasgow Coma Score of 15 on examination alone or in combination cannot exclude the presence of intra-cranial injury.
