The Establishment of an Intracranial Tumour Registry at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Synopsis:

A hospital-based intracranial tumour registry (ITR) was established at the University Hospital of the West Indies in March 2010. This paper reports on the challenges encountered in establishing the ITR as well as the initial findings. Recommendations have also been put forward which may be useful to other researchers planning to implement a registry.

The traditional management of breast abscesses results in significant patient morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, increased expense and loss of productive work hours. Non-operative management has not traditionally been undertaken in our institution and prospective protocolbased trials are necessary to identify the patients most suitable for this line of management in a setting with limited resources.

Expression of Low Molecular Weight Proteins in Patients with Leukaemia

Synopsis:

This study was conducted to observe the differences in the level of low molecular weight proteins in the sera of patients with leukaemia in comparison to healthy subjects. The sera of patients with leukaemia showed 15 peaks in the densitometric curve in comparison to the seven peaks of the controls; eight protein fractions appeared in the experimental groups and not in the control group.

The Role of Pre-induction Ketamine in the Management of Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Elective Gynaecological Surgery at the University Hospital of the West Indies

Synopsis:

A prospective case-controlled randomized study was performed to assess the effect of ketamine 0.15 mg/kg pre-induction on postoperative narcotic requirements and pain scores. There was no significant reduction in analgesic consumption or pain intensity; however, more patients who received ketamine reported higher levels of satisfaction with their pain management.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To determine if a single preoperative dose of ketamine hydrochloride reduces the narcotic analgesic requirements and/or pain scores reported by patients in the first 24 hours postoperatively.

This study suggests that lower magnesium levels and higher endothelin-1 levels might be important factors in changes of bone mineral density in malnutrition. We recommend that the malnourished patient, especially with hypomagnesaemia, be treated with magnesium early.

Sociodemographic Determinants of Complicated Unsafe Abortions in a Semi-urban Nigerian Town: A Four-year Review

Synopsis:

Unfavourable sociodemographic factors are major determinants of the high incidence of unsafe abortion in the Niger Delta despite strict abortion laws. Concrete measures must be put in place to address these, as unsafe abortion and its complications are a major cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in this environment.

ABSTRACT

Background: Abortions performed by persons lacking the requisite skills or in environments lacking minimal medical standards or both are considered unsafe. It is estimated that over 20 million unsafe abortions are performed annually and about 70 000 women die globally as a result, with the majority occurring in the developing world. This study aims to determine the sociodemographic factors involved in complicated unsafe abortions.
