Mediterranean Fever Gene Mutations in Greek Patients with Behcet’s Disease

Issue:
Pages:
28–31
Synopsis:
Pyrin gene mutations in Greek patients with Behçet’s disease are not more common than the general population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: It is known that clinical similarities between Behcet’s disease and Familial Mediterranean Fever have led to the hypothesis of a common pathogenesis. Familial Mediterranean Fever is caused by MEFV gene mutations coding for pyrin. Therefore, we examined whether these pyrin mutations are also associated with Behcet’s disease.

Early Changes in Carcinogenesis of Colorectal Adenomas

Issue:
Pages:
10–6
Synopsis:
Ki-67 expression both in the crypt-surface epithelium and cyclin D1, c-erb B2, bcl-2 over-expression may be a clue of dysplastic epithelium. If the role of human papillomavirus is elucidated in colonic carcinogenesis, vaccination might prevent carcinogenesis from the virus.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Adenocarcinoma of the colon and rectum is the third most common cause of cancer deaths and the sixth most common cancer in the world. Adenomas are benign neoplastic lesions which can be transformed into carcinomas, but this is usually not the case. There should be some risk factors which lead to the development of carcinomas into adenomas. The aim of this study is to find out the early changes and high risk factors related to carcinogenesis in colonic polyps.

Effect of Moderate Ethanol Administration on Biochemical Indices in Streptozotocin-diabetic Wistar Rats

Issue:
Pages:
3–9
Synopsis:
Moderate ethanol administration did not affect fasting blood glugose and HbA1c, but altered the lipid profile of streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Moderate ethanol intake may further increase the risk of complications in diabetes.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of moderate ethanol administration on the biochemical indices in streptozotocin (STZ)-diabetic rats.

Ophthalmic Manifestations of HIV in the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy Era

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.210
Pages:

Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia in a Cohort of HIV-positive Women at the University Hospital of the West Indies: Management and Outcome

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2013.223
Pages:
313–7
Synopsis:
This article identifies the risk of recurrence of cervical dysplasia in HIV-positive women. Results indicate that HIV increases the risk of recurrence but once women who are HIV positive maintain their antiretroviral agents and have good CD4 counts then their risk would be similar to that of HIV-negative women.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the rate of recurrence of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) in HIVpositive women evaluated at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).
