Shakatani: The Phenomenology of Personality Disorder in Jamaican Patients

Synopsis:

The distribution and clinically significant patterns of the phenomenology of a naturalistic case-controlled private practice displayed symptoms of a ‘clinical triad’ of power management, dependency and psychosexual issues. This phenomenological approach has been called Shakatani - from the Swahili words shaka (problem) and tani (power), and is suggested to be an Axis I replacement for the four-cluster Axis II classification of the DSM-IV personality disorder.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the distribution and clinically significant patterns of the phenomenology of a cohort of Jamaican patients with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) Axis II diagnosis of personality disorder and to clarify the conventional diagnostic deficiencies of DSMbased personality disorder categories.

This article serves to trace the history of laparoscopic surgery in the West Indies and to uncover the advances in this field in the Caribbean.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The first world witnessed a laparoscopic revolution in the 1990s. At the start, laparoscopic surgery was heavily criticized and ridiculed. Despite this, the specialty has blossomed where almost any procedure can be done laparoscopically with the now obvious tremendous benefit to the patients. The objective of this paper is to examine where the Caribbean is placed relative to the rest of the world in terms of laparoscopic surgery and to understand why we are here.

Objective: The twin epidemics of HIV and homelessness present several challenging aspects to the development of programmes for the provision of treatment and care. Synopsis:

This study compared the changing patterns of mortality in infants and adults during the pre-independence and postindependence eras in Trinidad and Tobago. The main challenges in the pre-independence period arose predominantly from infectious diseases and in the post-independence period from non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This rising tide of NCDs is the most important challenge in the new millennium to the structure and delivery of healthcare services.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the changing patterns of mortality in adults and infants during the pre-independence period 1953–1962 with the post-independence period 1962–2006 thus providing evidence for the burden of disease and the impact of independence on the state of health of
the nation.

Synopsis:

The burgeoning migration of Caribbean people to England in the twentieth century resulted in high reported rates of psychosis for this migrant population. Caribbean research has revealed the existence of hostile racial and environmental challenges in Britain as the primary cause of this condition. These findings have significantly shifted the pendulum of understanding of the aetiology of psychosis from a genetic to a biopsychosocial position.
