Fibro-osseous Lesions of the Craniofacial Region: A 14-year Experience

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.150
Pages:
539-44
Synopsis:
Fibro-osseous lesion (FOL) is a broad term for a diverse group of jaw and craniofacial disorders that are often painless but grow progressively if uncontrolled. In this study, retrospective survey of the records of all patients with histopathological diagnosis of fibro-osseous lesion was undertaken.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Fibro-osseous lesion is a broad term for a diverse group of jaw and craniofacial disorders that are often painless, but grow progressively, if uncontrolled. They are characterized by the replacement of normal bone by fibrous connective tissue matrix displaying varying degrees of mineralization in the form of woven bone or cementum-like structures.

E148Q as a Familial Mediterranean Fever-causing Mutation: A Clinical-based Study

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.162
Pages:
304-8
Synopsis:
Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a genetic disease. M694V, V726A, M680I, M694I and E148Q are the most frequent mutations. The role of E148Q is still controversial. Our aim was to evaluate the E148Q mutation and compare it with other FMF-causing mutations.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the clinical implications of E148Q mutation in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) patients and compare it with other FMF causing mutations.

Methods: The clinical features of 137 FMF patients with E148Q have been evaluated. Moreover, the clinical features of those patients have been compared with the clinical symptoms of FMF patients with other mutations.

Salivary IgA and Total Protein in Human Subjects with Oral Lichen Planus and Squamous Cell Carcinoma

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.230
Synopsis:
The study aimed to compare salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) and total protein (TP) in patients suffering from oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), against healthy control. Salivary total protein was found to be higher in OSCC patients than OLP patients but the IgA level was similar in these patients.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) and total protein (TP) in patients suffering from oral lichen planus (OLP) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), against healthy control.

A Family Diagnosed as MEN2A with a Rare Mutation D631Y in RET Oncogene

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.231
Synopsis:
Mutations in the RET proto-oncogene are well documented as the genetic cause of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A) and familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC). Herein, we report a rare mutation of the RET gene (D631Y) in a Turkish family with MEN 2A.

Therapeutic Effect Analysis of Radiofrequency Ablation on Transarterial Chemoembolization Postoperative Residual

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.143
Synopsis:
This study evaluated the clinical effects of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) postoperative residual tumor in liver cancer. RFA can efficiently clear the TACE postoperative residual tumor and prolong both progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the clinical effects of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) postoperative residual tumor in liver cancer.

Thyroid Dysfunction Related to Interferon in Turkish Patients with Viral Hepatitis: Incidence and Influencing Factors

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.141
Synopsis:
Although TD secondary to interferon treatment in patients with CHB-C may develop in a substantial rate, most of these are temporary and do not require TD treatment. Independent risk factors in TD development were found to be gender and age.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Interferon therapy is widely used for patients with chronic viral hepatitis B and C (CHB-C). It is known that thyroid gland dysfunction (TD) may develop secondary to interferon treatment, but different frequencies of TD development are reported in the literature. For this reason, we aimed to investigate the incidence of TD developing secondary to interferon treatment in patients with CHB-C treated in our clinic and possible influence factors.

The Frequency and Significance of the Vertebral Artery Hypoplasia in Posterior Circulation Stroke

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.125
Synopsis:
Vertebral artery hypoplasia is a risk factor for posterior circulation stroke onset. Its presence in patients with posterior circulation stroke is a poor prognostic parameter significantly correlating with the severity of clinical presentation and higher mortality rate.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Vertebral artery hypoplasia (VAH) is an uncommon embryonic variation of posterior (vertebrobasilar) circulation. The literature reports on its incidence in general population are in the range between 2 and 10%. The aim of the paper was to analyze the frequency and association between VAH and posterior circulation stroke (PCS). Besides VAH, other risk factors responsible for PCS were examined.
