The Role of Cardioselective Beta Blockers in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test and Echocardiography in COPD Patients

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.348
Synopsis:
Physicians are still reluctant to use β-blockers in COPD patients as it is a contraindication. Previous studies evaluating pulmonary function test showed that β-blockers could be used in patients with COPD. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of cardioselective β-blockers on cardiopulmonary capacity during exercise. A novel test, CPET, is used in our study.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of cardioselective β-blockers in echocardiography and cardiopulmonary exercise tests (CPET) in COPD patients.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.359
Synopsis:
Boron supplementation in animal and human nutrition may have important effects on various metabolic, physiological systems of the organism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of borax on hematological parameters and immunoglobulin values in the rats.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Boron is an essential metalloid which plays a key role in plants and animals metabolisms. In the last few years boron compounds became increasingly more frequent in some hematological diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of borax as a boron source on hematological parameters and immunoglobulin (Ig) values in the rats.

Hemocompatibility Evaluation of Two Antimicrobial Peptides, Plantaricin CS and Snakin Z

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.285
Synopsis:
In this study, Plantaricin CS and Snakin Z showed hemocompatibility on RBC, WBC and Hematocrit in values that they have biological activities and so, they may be suitable pharmaceutical agents.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Plantaricin CS and Snakin Z are two peptides that purified from innate immune systems of two different species. Because of their biological activities, the use of these peptides in a variety of medical applications is possible. For this purposes, investigation of hemocompatibility and cytotoxicity of peptides is necessary.

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.048
Synopsis:
This exploratory study sought to understand the relationship between food insecurity, socio-demographic status (SDS) and diet quality in a sample of pregnant mothers in Trinidad As households tended towards severe food insecurity, their SDS decreased; overall diet quality was not statistically significant with food security status in this sample, neither was multigravidity statistically significant with higher diet quality.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This exploratory study sought to understand the relationship between food insecurity, socio-demographic status (SDS) and diet quality in a sample of pregnant mothers in Trinidad.
