Racial Differences in Seasonal Variation in Election and Non-election Years in the Male to Female Ratio at Birth in the United States

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.204
Synopsis:
The male-to-female birth ratio varies seasonally. United States births by gender and race (2003-13, n=45138496) were analysed. Seasonality may have been disturbed/reduced in most years due to elections. Black births were unaffected possibly due to chronic, socio-economic stress.

ABSTRACTS

Objective: In humans, male births exceed female births. This ratio is conventionally expressed to M/F and is influenced by a large number of factors, including stress. This study was carried out in order to ascertain whether the known seasonal variation in M/F in the United States (peaking in June) is affected by the quadrennial elections (November), and whether any such influences vary by race.

Feasibility, Risks, and Outcomes of Percutaneous Oblique Extraforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion Technique

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.214
Synopsis:
The medical records of the patients who had extraforaminal lumbar fusion were reviewed. There were significant improvements in their clinical outcomes on VAS and NDI scores; however, less than favourable results as the complication rate was noted at 50%.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility, risks and outcomes of percutaneous oblique extraforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (ELIF) technique. There is a growing interest in using less invasive and less exposure surgery techniques but very little has been written on an extraformainal approach for decompression and interbody fusion through Kambin’s Triangle with the advantage of sparing the facets and lamina plus dissection of the multifidus muscles.

A Combined Cross-sectional and Longitudinal Study of Predicting Metabolic Syndrome and Cardiovascular Disease by Using Haemoglobin in the Elderly

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2014.157
Pages:
65–71
Synopsis:
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has an important implication from a preventive medicine perspective, as early recognition and intervention will reduce associated mortality and morbidity. To better identify patients at risk for developing MetS and cardiovascular disease, we conducted a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study to shed light on the elevated haemoglobin (Hb) levels in the elderly. Haemoglobin is associated with MetS. Elevated Hb with a cut-off value of 14.6 and 13.7 for males and females respectively; can potentially be used as a marker to stratify the risks of developing MetS for both genders and cardiovascular disease in the female population.

Anti-social Personality Disorder and Conduct Disorder (ASPD/CD), Ethnicity and other Characteristics of the Alcohol Treatment Population in Trinidad and Tobago

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.477
Synopsis:
Understanding the role of personality disorders in alcohol abuse/dependence co-morbidity may highlight its possible role as a predictor for alcohol addiction among ethnic groups in the Trinidad and Tobago population.

ABSTRACT

Background: Individuals of East Indian and African ancestry constitute the largest population subgroups in Trinidad and Tobago. Many differences are observed in their drinking behaviour and are attributed to cultural and social factors. The aim of this paper is to determine if there are differences in personality disorder diagnosis in alcohol abuse/ dependent patients who attend treatment facilities in Trinidad and Tobago.
