Self-reported Hearing Loss Associated with Frailty among Afro-Caribbeans

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.174
Pages:
29-34
Synopsis:
This paper investigated the relationship between self-reported hearing loss and frailty in four ethnic groups. Self-reported hearing loss was found to be associated with frailty among Afro-Caribbeans, and this association was largely due to the frailty criterion of exhaustion.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Data on ethnic differences in the relationship between hearing loss and frailty are sparse. We investigated the relationship between self-reported hearing loss and frailty in four ethnic groups.

Acute Pseudomembranous Candidiasis Front at Cleft Lip and Palate: Are There Additional Correlations?

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.157
Synopsis:
Cleft lip and palate require in most cases the performance of surgical procedures. During the postoperative periods, there is a greater predisposition to possible episodes by Candida infection. The oral hygiene preventive maneuvers should be strengthened and initiated during infancy.

Association between Mannose-Binding Lectin 2 Gene Polymorphism and Liver Fibrosis in Patients with Chronic Viral Hepatitis

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.155
Pages:
7-12
Synopsis:
In this study, Mannose-Binding Lectin 2 (MBL2) gene polymorphism were investigated in patients with viral Hepatitis B and C. No significant differences in allele frequencies for any polymorphism were observed between patients and controls.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) has become a popular molecule in investigations on basic and clinical gastroenterology and contributed to new approaches to the understanding of infectious and immune diseases associated with intestine and liver. The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between codon 54 polymorphisms in MBL2 gene coding MBL and predisposition to fibrosis in patients with viral hepatitis B and C.

Expectations of Treatment of Hepatitis C in Children

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.153
Synopsis:
The study aimed at presenting a general overview of the current treatments for HCV infection in children. In children the most commonly used drugs are pegylated alpha interferon in combination with ribavirin only Boceprevir was tested and not approved for use in children. Safety and efficacy of new drugs in children need further investigation.

ABSTRACT

Background: HCV infection in children differs from infection in adult through transmission paths, spontaneous viral clearance rate, and fibrosis progression duration of chronic infection. It is estimated that the rate of children with chronic hepatitis C will develop cirrhosis is less than 2%, however there are reports of children requiring liver transplantation.

Immunohistopathological and Biochemical Study of the Effects of Dead Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Extract on Preventing Liver Lesions Induced by Experimental Aflatoxicosis in Rats

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.126
Pages:
254-61
Synopsis:
This paper studied the preventive effects of dead nettle extract on liver lesions that were induced by experimental aflatoxicosis in rats. According to the biochemical and histopathological findings of the study, antioxidant system activity increased and lipid peroxidation and liver enzyme levels decreased in the group that received dead nettle leaf extract. As a result, it could be concluded that dead nettle leaf extract had hepatoprotective effects against aflatoxicosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Aflatoxicosis is a mycotoxicosis infection with an acute or chronic course that forms due to aflatoxins (AFs) in humans and animals. Aflatoxins primarily affect the liver and can lead to histopathological necrosis, fibrosis and hepatocarcinogenesis of the organ. This paper studied the preventive effects of dead nettle leaf (Urtica dioica leaf; UDL) extract on liver lesions that were induced by experimental aflatoxicosis in rats.

Tracheal Intubation Using Trueview® Videolaryngoscopy Versus Direct Macintosh® Laryngoscopy: An observational, Case-control Study

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.597
Synopsis:
Videolaryngoscopy is a method of tracheal intubation which is mainly used for the difficult airway. Its superiority and safety over direct laryngoscopy makes it a more appropriate tool for routine tracheal intubation.

ABSTRACT

Background: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of videolaryngoscopy, performed with the help of Trueview® device, for routine oro-tracheal intubations compared with visualization by direct laryngoscopy, performed with McIntosh laryngoscope.

Distribution of Bcl-2 in Odontogenic Cyst and Tumours: Histochemical Study

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.579

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The Odontogenic Keratocyst is known for its aggressiveness, high recurrence rate and transformation of keratinized epithelia to non-keratinized squamous epithelium for which inflammation has been suggested to be responsible. bcl-2 an anti-apoptotic protein, prolongs the life span of epithelial cells and allows proliferation, differentiation and morphogenesis.

Laparoscopic Pancreaticoduodenectomy - Experiences of 40 Cases

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.119
Synopsis:
Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) was still one of the most challenging endoscopic surgeries by far and there were still some technical problems to be resolved. In this study, we try to investigate the difficulties and countermeasures of the LPD using a retrospective analysis for the surgical techniques of the LPD carried out for 40 patients in our hospital from December 2009 to Jul 2015 and the clinical data such as operative time, intra-operative blood loss, numbers of scavenged lymph node and postoperative complications were collected. The result showed that application of appropriate surgical approach, improvement of the resection of UP and modification of the pancreaticojejunostomy(PJ) could make the LPD easier and safer.

ABSTRACT

Background: Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) was still one of the most challenging endoscopic surgeries by far and there were still some technical problems to be resolved. In this study, we try to investigate the difficulties and countermeasures of the LPD.
