Construction of a Low-cost Homemade Laparoscopic Simulator for Use in a Caribbean Setting

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.047
Pages:
20-3
Synopsis:
Training in laparoscopic surgery is essential for today’s surgical residents, but surgical simulators are costly. This article described the construction of a cheap, easy-to-assemble laparoscopic simulator which is suitable for use in training Caribbean residents in laparoscopic surgery.

ABSTRACT

Background: To the modern surgeon in training, the acquisition of laparoscopic skills is essential. Laparoscopic simulators are effective, but in the often-resource-poor setting of the Caribbean, the cost of these simulators is often prohibitive. We describe the construction of a simulator which is cheap, easy to assemble and effective. It is also relatively easy to mass produce for use in training programmes across the region.

Clustering of Ultrasound Cervix Image Using Objective Function

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.118
Synopsis:
Clustering technique that has been effectively applied to feature investigation, classifier designs in field such as medical imaging and image segmentation. This clustering is achieved by iteratively reducing a cost functionality. It is based on minimization of the objective function.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate a clustering method that gets the similarity between the classes, where the comparison measure controls how the clusters are formed.

Influence of Silver-hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite Coating on Biofilm Formation of Joint Prosthesis and Its Mechanism

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.179
Pages:
506–13
Synopsis:
The main reason for biomaterial-related refractory infections is biofilm formation caused by bacterial adhesion on the surface of materials. Silver-hydroxyapatite (Ag/HA) nanocomposite coating can inhibit the formation of biofilm, but its mechanism is not clear. In this study, we will determine the amount of biofilm on the Ag/HA composite coating, detect the sustained release rates of silver ions in simulated body fluid, the effects on the biofilm formation of bacteria and the expression of genes related to biofilm formation of S aureus.

ABSTRACT

Background: The main reason for biomaterial related refractory infections is biofilm formation caused by bacterial adhesion on the surface of materials. Silver-hydroxyapatite (Ag/HA) nanocomposite coating can inhibit the formation of biofilm, but its mechanism is not clear.

Effect of Different Dialysis Methods on Cellular Immunity Function of Maintenance Haemodialysis Patients

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.178
Pages:
499–505
Synopsis:
This study will provide theoretical support for deciding on the best method of blood purification which effectively improves cellular immune function of patients on maintenance haemodialysis. The results indicate that haemodialysis can briefly improve the cellular immune function of patients on maintenance haemodialysis.

ABSTRACT

Background: The study of the effect of different dialysis methods on cellular immune function of maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients should provide theoretical support for deciding on the best method of blood purification that effectively improves cellular immune function of haemodialysis patients.

Serum Magnesium and High-sensitive C-reactive Proteins in Hypertensive, Obese Female School Learners

Issue:
DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2015.292
Pages:
32-7
Synopsis:
This study highlights the increased cardiovascular risks in overweight/obese female school learners in an understudied region of South Africa. There were higher proportions of pre-hypertension, hypertension, and low-grade inflammation in overweight/obese participants in comparison with their lean participants.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To examine the relationship of serum magnesium and high-sensitive C-reactive proteins (hsCRPs) with overweight/obesity, and its association with hypertension in lean versus overweight/obese (O/O), female, adolescent school learners living in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Risk of Postpartum Depression in the Early Postnatal Period

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.033
Synopsis:
Postpartum depression is an important health problem because of its negative impact on the family. Our study evidences that the risk factors for postpartum depression were onset of labour, type of delivery, reasons for not having epidural anaesthesia, and parity. Knowing this kind of data can help us to better understand and improve the prognosis of our patients.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Postpartum depression is an important health problem because of its negative impact on the family. The objective of this study was to ascertain the risk of depression in new mothers who had recently given birth in public university hospitals in Granada and to identify the factors that most contributed to the onset of postpartum depression.

Assessment of Functional Capacity in Patients with Hypertension Using the Six Minute Walk Test

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2016.099
Synopsis:
Functional capacity assessment is now a recognized method for evaluating a person's ability to utilize oxygen during exercise. A six-minute walk test is the most popular and widely used because it’s easy to use and requires no sophisticated equipment. The patients with hypertension should be routinely assessed to monitor their treatment effectiveness and the patients’ clinical status.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Assessment of functional capacity (FC) is useful in monitoring patient’s progress and also predicts the prognosis. However, sophisticated laboratory equipments are usually required which are not readily available in the clinical settings. This study assessed FC of patients with hypertension using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6-MWT).
