Forensic Technology, Inc
Forensic Technology is the world leader in providing automated ballistics technology to the law enforcement community. IBIS (Integrated Ballistics Identification System) is Forensic Technology’s cornerstone product. IBIS harnesses the power of computers and other technology to help experts find matches among large inventories of fired ammunition components from crime scenes and test fired weapons.
From the perspective of a solution provider, Forensic Technology has observed that some stand out among others as highly successful users of the Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS). These “power users” were found to share many things in common in terms of the critical tasks that they perform and the practices that they utilize in order to sustain their successes.
In May of 2005, Forensic Technology began an effort to identify the tasks and best practices that are critical to the operation of an efficient and effective ballistics information sharing network. A core working group was formed made up of IBIS users, members of the academic community, and Forensic Technology personnel with experience in forensic ballistics, firearms crime investigation, and IBIS technology. The members of the core working group drew upon personal experience as well as the experiences of highly successful IBIS users the world over.
As a result, 13 Critical Tasks were identified along with a number of best supporting practices from around the world.
