Reflections on the 2021 theme - The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather: "A fitting theme that highlights the tightly linked ocean-atmosphere interaction, and varying impacts on different time scales. On a shorter time scale, the ocean influences weather patterns through processes such as sea/land breezes and cloud development. Additionally, on longer time scales, small localized changes in one aspect of how the ocean stores and transports heat can produce major climate variations over large areas of the earth."

Alton Daley

Degree: MPhil Applied Physics
Position and Place of Employment: Intern, Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology, Husbands, St. James, Barbados

Reflections on 2021 theme - The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather:
"The 2021 theme for World Meteorological Day of The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather is one of great significance for people from SIDS. The ocean is a source of income for many individuals, whether it be through fisheries or tourism. Oceans also have the potential to be a green source of energy but it is key for us to harness such power in a sustainable way."

Tyshona Hewitt

Degree(s): First Class Honours BSc Physics (Major), Management Studies (Minor)
Position and place of employment: Acting Front Line Supervisor @ Meteorological Service of Jamaica

Reflections on the 2021 theme - The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather:
"The oceans play a huge factor in regulating our climate. Therefore it is imperative for us to understand how oceans operate in order to identify the mechanisms of climate change and make informed forecasts about our weather and climate."

Sheldon Grant

Qualification: Bachelor of Science (Physics) Major – Energy and Environmental Physics Minor – Electronics Masters of Philosophy – Pending Climate Science (Physics)
Position: Mitigation Programmes Officer Employer: Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM)

Reflections on the 2021 Theme - The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather
"Central to the role of Mitigation Programmes Officer within the ODPEM, is the conceptualisation and implementation of projects and programmes aimed at strengthening Jamaica’s overall resilience to Disaster Risks. To accomplish resilience, there are a number of essential actions needed to support programmes/projects within the agency and the various risk reduction management frameworks locally. These include: Baseline data collection and analysis, Synergising Country Outputs to augment limited GOJ resources while capitalising on the regional ambitions to attain climate resilience. These areas rely heavily on research and scientific analysis into the weather and climate locally. Ten of the fourteen parish capitals are coastal towns which carry inherent disaster risk both from the coastline and overall watershed area. Actions towards understanding the extent to which Jamaica’s weather and climate are influence by the ocean will strengthen disaster mitigation. This will also inform response planning and improve recovery efforts to ultimately raise Jamaica’s resilience"
