Strategic Planning and Institutional Research

Vision

To be a Faculty that is:

  • Realizing impact through research;
  • Exceeding the expectations of our students;
  • Actively advocating for sustainable, inclusive development;
  • Committed to being caring professionals; and
  • Harnessing our skills through continuous improvement.

Mission

To best utilize all the available talents, resources, information and ideas to enhance the efficacy and efficiency with which the FSS functions, in the effort to realize the FSS-REACH vision.

Strategic Priorities

For the FSS-REACH vision to be realized, it has to capture the hearts and minds of those expected to implement – engagement of the FSS staff (the people) is critical. Mechanisms then have to be put into place to ensure that this is translated into performance. Performance is also impacted by the processes and procedures that we have in place in the faculty, which will also have to be improved. Finally, this all will have to be reinforced by structures, targets and goals, which will be captured in the planning process.

The four-pronged strategy for achieving the FSS-REACH vision will therefore be achieved by focusing on the key areas outlined below:

  • People: Equipping and empowering all categories of staff in a bid to maximize engagement, collaboration and continuous improvement
  • Performance: Creating a well-functioning meritocracy, built on the principles of fairness, accountability and performance management
  • Processes: Re-engineer internal processes to enhance agility and promote excellence
  • Planning: Implementing strategic and operational planning processes that benefit from broad-based consultation, institutional research, rigorous monitoring and evaluation, and continuous feedback mechanisms.

Goals

The goals below are general statements of what needs to be accomplished to implement each of the four abovementioned strategies. They also provide a good sense of how individuals and the faculty stand to benefit from the implementation of the strategies.

People - equipping and empowering all categories of staff in a bid to maximize engagement, collaboration and morale

  • Goal 1.1:     Staff at all levels will be continuously engaged through a process of collaborative problem solving and in the development of the Faculty’s workplace environment
  • Goal 1.2:     Opportunities will be provided to staff to continuously grow and develop, as they are empowered to utilize their skills in the realization of the FSS-REACH vision

Performance - creating a well-functioning meritocracy, built on the principles of fairness, accountability and performance management

  • Goal 2.1: Evaluation and promotions criteria and processes will be detailed, specific, transparent and equitably applied
  • Goal 2.2: Regular appraisals and performance conversations with staff members will form part of the organizational culture, and will be used as tools for mentorship and maintenance of accountability
  • Goal 2.3: Acceptable standards of performance for will be established for all levels of staff, and consistent performance above such levels will be recognized and rewarded
  • Goal 2.4: General leadership training will be provided to equip staff with supporting skills to improve performance
  • Goal 2.5: Learning and competency development opportunities will be provided to improve staff performance

Processes - re-engineer internal processes to enhance agility and promote excellence

  • Goal 3.1: Key processes that relate to student and staff matters at both the faculty and departmental levels will be documented and re-engineered to produce improved efficiencies
  • Goal 3.2: Minimum acceptable standards of performance for each of these processes will be established, communicated to all stakeholders, rigorously applied, and monitored and evaluated

Planning - implementing strategic and operational planning processes that benefit from broad-based consultation, institutional research, rigorous monitoring and evaluation, and continuous feedback mechanisms.

  • Goal 4.1: FSS Strategic and Operational Plans will be informed by institutional research, design thinking methodologies and continuous feedback mechanisms
  • Goal 4.2: Relevant information will be regularly produced, analysed and disseminated, so as to inform decision-making in the FSS, and enhance the efficiency and quality of reporting within and external to the FSS
  • Goal 4.3: Faculty-level mechanisms will be established and will function to ensure that adherence to the faculty and departmental plans is monitored and evaluated.
